As we enter a New Year, our thoughts naturally turn towards the possibilities for the year ahead. We look at how things are now and we wonder where we might want to be down the road. We make all sorts of resolutions meant to help us become our best selves; resolutions meant to help us thrive; resolutions meant to help us find the abundant life Jesus speaks of. However, for all sorts of reasons, it is difficult to make those resolutions stick! Often it is easy to see where you want to go, but hard to see how to get there. Research on the development of habits has shown that having a community of support and creating meaningful incentives are ways to increase the likelihood of success. Of late, Behavioral Economists have demonstrated one way to reach elusive goals is to make a contract (which is really just a bet) such that if you don’t live up to the terms there is a significant consequence. Let’s imagine you want to give up drinking soda and you are a fan of Michigan State. If you have a contract stipulating that if you drink a soda you are obligated to donate $10,000 to the University of Michigan, then you probably won’t be drinking soda anymore.
